Can I Please Go Back

by Kareemat Adebisi

Identity & Longing

Can I please go back to a time when I had no colour?

When I moved through the world untaught to see differences,
before names and labels settled onto my skin like dust,
and innocence was untouched by the weight of gazes?

When my hair was just that, my hair.
And my skin was just my skin.

Can I please go back to a time when I saw no colour?

My heart yearns to remember the warmth from my smile
that once pierced every chamber.
